ENT Lasers

Nowadays, lasers became nearly indispensable in the field of ENT surgery. Depending on the application, three different lasers are used: the diode laser with the wavelengths of 980nm or 1470nm, the green KTP laser or the CO2 laser.

The different wavelengths of the diode lasers have different impact on the tissue. There is a good interaction with color pigments (980nm) or a good absorption in water (1470nm). The diode laser has, depending on the requirements of the application, either a cutting or a coagulating effect. The flexible fiber optics together with variable hand pieces make minimal invasive surgeries possible – even under local anesthesia. Especially, when it comes to surgeries in areas where the tissue has an increased blood circulation, e.g.  tonsils or polyps, the diode laser allows surgeries with hardly any bleedings.

For bigger surgeries, e.g. tumor removal, you can use the CO2 laser in combination with the articulated arm or the flexible wave guide, which is mostly used in the throat area. Larger tissue changes can be removed precisely, without direct contact and, especially, without greater blood loss.

The green KTP laser is an additional alternative to the diode laser. Due to its low penetration depth, the KTP laser is working in a very tissue protective way, which is very important in sensitive areas like the vocal chords.

These are the most convincing advantages of a laser surgery:

  • good wound healing with uncomplicated follow-up care
  • hardly any side effects
  • possibility to operate people with a cardiac pacemaker
  • treatments under local anesthesia possible (esp. rhinology and vocal chords treatments

Rhinology

The nasal interior, which is covered in mucosa with good blood circulation, is especially suitable for a variety of endonasal laser treatments. The laser radiation is highly absorbed in “red tissue”, meaning in blood. This characteristic does not only allow a removal of excess tissue but does also cause hemostasis at the same time. This leads to an operating area free of blood and to reduced scarring.

Traumas and thereof resulting side effects, like pain can be significantly reduced. Undesired nose tamponades and wound healing problems are now things of the past, thanks to the laser therapy.

When it comes to inner ear surgeries, it becomes more and more common to not use instruments like scalpels or micro drills in order to avoid traumatic side effects and to not damage the sensitive structures.

Laryngology and Pharyngology

In the area of the throat, our laser is primarily used for the reduction of tissue (tonsils) or for tumor resection. Yet, the laser is also used to help patients with extreme snoring problems by reducing the uvula or removing tissue from the soft palate. It also can be used to remove malign tumors in the upper respiratory system and esophagus (oral cavity, pharynx and larynx). Here, the physician also has the possibility to choose between manually lead hand pieces and a micromanipulator.
